Roman silver plate with fish engraving

330-350 CE

“At the center of the plate is a fish floating to the right, holding in its mouth a rolled-up thread, probably a worm. This motif can not necessarily be interpreted as a Christian sign, because fish and other marine creatures often appear in Roman art as symbols of happy existence and wealth.”

from Augusta Raurica (Augst, Switzerland)
